H
eads will Roll with Laughter!
Lord Carrett has been obsessed
with satire since he cut his teeth on
one-liners in his father's bar when he
was four. Dressed to the nines and
sporting his now famous pompadour
hairstyle, Carrett will give comedy
fans a reason to be thankful when he
performs at Mason City Limits the
week of Thanksgiving. Besides the
usual Friday and Saturday shows,
there will also be a rare Wednesday
s h o w, t h e n i g h t b e f o r e
Thanksgiving.
Carrett describes himself as
Wayne Newton on a bender. The
Baltimore-Sun said, “Lord Carrett is
a cross between Sid Caeser and Sid
Vicious.” Constant touring over
twenty year, built Lord a big
following across the U.S Now you
can catch him on radio as he's a
regular guest on Bob & Tom and a
staple on both Sirius and XM
Satellite Radio Lord's managed the
rare feat of working his way up to
playing theaters without a sitcom or
major television exposure!
Lord got a nationwide boost last
year when XM Satellite Radio (with
two million subscribers) aired the
hour long special "New Comic On
The Block with Lord Carrett”
. The special (with interview) aired
on XM Comedy Radio in May, and
XM regularly plays cuts from his
C D : " L o r d C a r r e t t :
UNSWEETENED." The idea
behind Lord's CD is as unique as
Lord himself. It was recorded in one
take, one show, with no editing,
overdubs, or laugh track added.
On his unique first name, Carrett
explains: "Lord" is a family name - a
last name from my mother's side of
the family that they gave me... and
then sent me off to thirteen years of
Catholic school! I think giving a
child an unusual name produces an
unusual person. It's the “Boy
Named Sue Syndrome.” I've always
had to defend myself after every
introduction, which prepared me for
stand-up.”
As for his retro-look, Lord has
always been fascinated by
rockabilly music. “As a kid, all my
favorite songs were rockabilly, but I
didn't have a name for it. Then the
Stray Cats exploded on the scene,
and re-introduced the term into
American culture, and I realized that
I'd been a rockabilly cat from day
one. In showbiz, I figured I could
dress anyway I wanted and I tried to
get a pompadour,” said Carrett.
He had an unfortunate detour after
a hairdresser told him he would need
a perm to 'getmyhair to do that.' “To
protect future generations of
rockabilly cats from the indignity of
having their hair in curlers, I've put a
pompadour page on my website
(www.LordofLaughs.com.) and
walk people through the history, care
and feeding of the pomp. I even
Photoshop-ed my hair onto famous
bald guys like Yul Brenner and Tom
Griswald of 'Bob & Tom.'”
Lord comedy style is as unique as
he is. “I always had a taste for jokes
that were clever and/or obscure,”
said Carrett. “ I had to find a way to
make them work, or to incorporate
their failure, so I became a “recovery
artist.” Meaning a comic who
specializes in recovering from
‘bombs.’
I've always written jokes that
don't have a set place in the set that I
use to recover when a joke falls flat.
Often the tension that's created when
a joke fails is a wonderful
springboard for the next joke, and
gives it added impact. Johnny
Carson was the king of that style of
comedy.
“When you're a comic, you're
basically a trucker haulin' jokes,”
says Carrett. “My last car had 210
thousand miles on it. I drove it onto
one lot, and the salesman asked me
what I had to trade. When I told him,
he looked at me like I'd just said:
“What do I have to trade? ...Just
these MAGICBEANS!"
